6 The Green showing work by local artist Emma Midghall
Emma compiles images in an attempt to make sense and reinterpret them, constructing a new meaning by way of collage. She uses old photographs, cut-outs from magazines, leaflets, newspapers- anything that can be cut and manipulated.
There can be several varieties of a collage and yet the outcome, the idea, is never the same. Emma is fascinated with representation and presentation; how the slightest change, the loss of something important, the overcompensation, can hinder the experience of art and of the subject itself.
The themes tend to focus on gender, human nature, history, subculture and mythicism and, finally, destruction, relying wholly on the power of aesthetics to portray such themes.
